EMU – what does EMU word strikes in the minds of you people when you hear this word? Many people will think that EMU is just an Australian bird but for the people Chennai EMU METRO is the Life of many people. EMU stands for Electric Multiple Unit for Chennai.
I think more than me, my friends like Dinesh, Dhilip, Sreenath, Archana, Bharathi etc can write more on this because they have boarded the train almost twice a day when we were in UG days, But I too have long experience of 6 long years in EMU Chennai so I can share it with pleasure lols !!
At first in 2004 I was excited to travel in EMU trains used to enjoy and wonder by seeing the train getting stopped at each and every station. I have travelled at all odd times in the train, even have travelled the 1st train from Tambaram by 4 in the morning and also have boarded the train the last train from Beach station to Tambaram. More than bus in Chennai I have travelled in train because I prefer Train than MTC Buses in Chennai which really sucks.
Most pleasant experience I got from the train is the FOOTBOARD STANDING, I know it’s an offence, but breaking rules always the hobby of the youngsters, the same I did. I leant how to stand in the Footboard, get down and get in from the running train and even I have stood in very pathetic conditions few times by this holding my finger tips in the middle bar of the board and only one leg in the platform another will be in air! It’s not Bluff it’s the truth. Real fun I get when I travel like that.
I have enjoyed all the moments in the train, I personally prefer to go by train because never gets tired and see the moving people – a set of people gets down and another set of people gets in, you can never see empty coaches in the train even in the last trains atleast one to two there will be people travelling up and down.
I bet you all that you can never get an empty space to stand during the peak hours even though there will be train for 10 min without fail, some people wait for the Fast passenger and travel easily, that much importance the Metro train has gained popularity in the minds of the Chennai people.
EMU may be a normal metro but this is the life for many peoples and the specially college and office goers and also for those for those who needs to save time to travel from Tambaram to Beach station, cos you can travel in just 50 min odd in normal and if you Beach Fast you can reach in 20min odd, which means of transport can reach at this rate.
I have admired many things in the Train few of them are:
· People read their newspapers, magazines, listen to FM, sometimes do crosswords.
· People Chit o Chat with their Train friends and sometimes play cards.
· Youngsters stand in the footboard.
· Lovers and pairs sit in the corner seats and do romance lols which is the time pass for the Old people to comment on them.
· Ladies cut vegetables during early morning hours, if government would have allowed them to use the Kerosene stove they would have cooked down. Some of them busily sit and sew some clothes.
· Highlight can be seen in the vendor coach, u can see people sleeping in the top slot of the luggage space carrier. Mostly big Milk cans or sometimes Cycle travel with us.
· Fruit vendors come and sell out, I have personally for a funny experience one day, I saw a lady selling 4 orange for rs10 in the morning fortunately I saw her in the late evening she was selling 10 oranges for rs10, when I happened to ask her about this she stated that this was her daily routine procedure, thought this is what business tactics come into play!!
· Physically challenged people come and try to sell out few important things like Ration card cover, Pencil, Scale and Ear buds, sometimes even City bus and train timings with Chennai city maps at real cheap and affordable prices.
· At worse cases few slum people come and perform some kinda gymnastic performance for their daily livings.
· Office goers have their breakfast in the train and also in the evening times have their snacks in the train.
· Vendors train specials like Groundnut (for Rs 2), Butter biscuit and Samosa.
These are some of the highlights of the EMU train from Tambaram to Beach Station.
Anyways to some up, EMU Southern borne trains Rocks in short !!!!!!!
I am proud that I have travelled in worlds Best Top Commutes, which is the Southern Metro EMU and also proud that its a part of Namma Chennai, what else you need people???
Ooops i forgot another milestone which the Chennai Metro Train achieved its the MRTS in common man’s language “Flying Train” which is runs from Beach to Velachery which too has gained popularity right from it has started.
There are still more than this. but if I write all those I am sure will take the whole page of my blog so end up here.

ReplyDeleteindeed India is the best in Railways immediately after China. but do you know Mumbai is the best in unit trains in the whole world? Check out this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YncwJaLJogg
I ve lived in mumbai and travelled like this when I was a kid. Once we missed my mom in Bandra station, as me and my sis were carried by my dad and my mom didnt get in and the train moved. Though its nothing at this age, I Can never forget my mom crying as we returned to oick her up.. Moreover, EMU is also knownas Electro Motive Unit da.. It works in Faraday's law of magnetism.... :):) Indeed alll the credits go to British who first laid track in india in Thane, Mumbai at 1930-1940 I guess. That movement has made India the best of all in Railways. I wish you visit MUmbai da... Chennai is also the best in Unit Loco as we have the production of wagons here in ICF, Perambur. Ever wondered how many tracks of bars of iron, gravels, electric lines, sheds, workshops, and commutors has Indian Railways involved. Railway is the largest employer in whole India.. thanks a lot for making me share vrious info machi.. u rock!! :):)
cool man i am proud to be indian because indian railway is largest employer in world ,,,,,,,,,
